It is reveal day!!! Are you as happy as I am?! Well, let me start off by saying that this project has been a blessing because we have learned so much throughout this process. We learned SO much and never thought we would ever tile anything on our own. When I started The Delighted Home, it was meant to be a “hobby” and I wanted to share some of the mini projects/crafts I was working on, but things escalated pretty quickly.
I would scroll through Instagram and admire some of the DIY projects being completed and thinking: “I wish I could do that!” and look at us know. We completed our FIRST (not our last) tile makeover.
The last 5 weeks…
Week 1: Demo
It all started out by removing our existing tile backsplash and having to complete some drywall repairs.
Removing the backsplash was fairly easy, but labor intensive. It felt like an accomplishment when a big chunk of tile was removed!
During week 1, my husband and I tag teamed with caring for our daughter and working on the kitchen and it worked out pretty well.
Week 2: Upper cabinet removal
We removed the upper cabinets! This was a hard decision to make, BUT I am so happy we decided to remove them because it opened up our kitchen so much!
Considering the resale value – we were worried! Then I realized, removing the upper cabinets is something I want to do and can care less about the next owners. We also have thoughts of keeping this house and renting it out once we decide to move, so I think removing the uppers was a great decision for our family.
Week 3: Epoxy Countertops
Marble Epoxy Countertops for the WIN!
Yes, I did this part on my own and I am so happy with the results. This was a dreaded step in the entire renovation project because I was very worried that it wouldn’t go as planned, but I will say that I am extremely happy with how the countertops turned out.
Week 4: Vent Hood Cover & Cabinet Painting
Oh boy! Let me just say, I am so proud of my husband taking on this task because he has ZERO experience with dealing with anything of this magnitude.
I think this entire kitchen project may have given him one or two gray hairs, but I know how happy he is with the outcome!
Building a custom vent hood cover was something I had to do some convincing with because he was not confident on building it. With the help of his dad over FaceTime, he built one heck of a vent hood cover.
Painting the cabinets was a breeze, thanks for our Wagner Paint Sprayer! This was our second time painting the cabinets and I wish we would have invested in the paint sprayer the first time.
We set up shop in our basement and sprayed on 1 coat of primer and two coats of Benjamin Moore’s Advance Paint and the outcome of the cabinets is almost perfection!
Week 5: Tile
Tiling was challenging! We have never tiled before, so we knew it would be time consuming, but we underestimated the how precision plays a role in this type of project.
Thankfully, we had some outside help to show us the basics and started the first few rows! I do not think we would have been able to do it without any help!
Finally, reveal day!
I am in LOVE with the outcome! If you read in Week 1, I did not like our kitchen, especially the color of our cabinets. The look of the kitchen did not flow with the rest of the house, so it was such an eye sore. Look at her now:
