A few months back, we announced we were expecting a new bundle of joy in February 2022. If you haven’t already, check out the blog post here. It is about time that I start designing a second gender neutral nursery – yay! Our first time around creating a gender neutral nursery was inspired by one of my favorite home decor and lifestyle bloggers – Tasha from OurDailyTribe. I knew I wanted an accent wall and at first, I considered wallpaper, but it was out of our budget. I came across the sponge wall that Tasha did in her son’s room and fell in love – this was way before the birth of TheDelightedHome and discovering my passion for home decor & DIY.
My thoughts…
As I begin to think about what I want for the new nursery, it is pretty much similar to Valli’s, but a few subtle changes. I think creating a gender neutral space is much easier nowadays because the neutral, bright and airy home was a popular home decor style for quite some time, which makes it easier to find neutral decor.
Now, we are beginning to see the transitional, vintage style slowly take over the home decor space – lots of color, vintage floral wallpaper and deep colored tones making their way into many homes. I would consider my style to be transitional more than anything, but when it comes to the nursery, I would say I lean more towards neutral, even now, as I begin to plan out a bedroom refresh for Valli.
Here are my tips…
- Paint Color: when thinking of gender neutral colors, it doesn’t always have to be grays or yellows. It is time to think outside of the box – greens, reds, and creams are always a great option. Choosing the right paint color can be daunting, but my best advice is to take your TIME! If you have the budget, take the extra step in buying paint samples first to make sure the color is the right color for the room. See the color palette below for some ideas:
- Accent wall: I feel like this is an important step when designing a gender neutral nursery, because the paint & accent wall should do all of the talking. If you truly want to refrain from gender specific details then creating an accent wall is important. You can choose wallpaper, board and batten wall, or even a sponge wall like I did in my daughter’s room (this is a much cheaper route). There is so much inspiration on Pinterest!
- Furniture: choosing furniture can be tricky because many cribs convert to toddler beds and twin/full size beds. The idea would be to get a crib that will be good for a boy or girl when they are older, so I suggest choosing natural wood or white cribs such as these two: Option 1 or Option 2.
- Area Rug: this one can be tricky because you want to choose a rug that is not only stylish, but also durable – I mean, this will be a room that houses a toddler, so getting a quality, durable area rug is important. Here are two affordable area rug options: Option 1 and Option 2. They are very similar, but the geometric pattern makes it kid-friendly and perfect for any nursery
- Decor: when considering decor try to limit the amount of wall decor – book shelves, baskets, mirror and faux greenery are the way to go. I suggest letting the paint color and accent wall do all of the work in this room. I’ve created a mood board below that will give you an idea of how to create a gender neutral nursery with subtle colors and tones:
