Thrifting is one of my favorite things to do, so I decided to come up with some of my favorite thrifting tips that will help anyone that wants to start thrifting. Do you feel overwhelmed or intimidated when you enter a thrift store? I know for me, in the past, when I walked into a thrift store, I would always feel like – where the hell do I start?
This simple guide will give you some direction the next time you walk into a thrift store!
If you are are local (Philadelphia, PA) and would like my list of recommended thrift stores, you can find my favorite thrift stores in this POST 🙂
My Tips…
- Decorative/Styling books: If you are looking for decorative/styling books, then the thrift store is the best place to find affordable styling books. First thing you need to do is remove the book jackets and look at the hardcover. Some things I look for are neutral colors and hardcovers that are still in good condition.
- Choosing vases/decorative accents: everything can be painted! So, don’t put that blue or red vase back! If it has a good shape to it, then put it in your cart and pick up your favorite colored spray paint and turn that vase into something that fits your aesthetic. Here’s an example of two thrifted vases that I made into something so much better!
- Textiles: DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT be afraid to buy textiles from the thrift store! I find the best throw blankets and pillows from the thrift store. One recommendation I do have – when I buy throw pillows is I always make sure the cover has a zipper and can be removed, so I can properly wash/sanitize it. Some people are nervous for sanitary reasons, but if properly clean prior to using then you are good to go!
- Lamps: this has always been my favorite to shop for when thrifting! You can find the best table lamps for less than $10. If you shop at your local home store, you can expect to pay $50 or more just for a lamp base! Here are some of my favorite lamp flips 😉
If you are still feeling overwhelmed or just need some inspiration, I do a bi-weekly “Thrift with me” segment on my Instagram stories, so make sure to follow along 🙂
